Joseph Marchese has recently relocated to the Outer Banks from New York City, having sung many leading operatic baritone roles in New York and internationally, in a variety of languages from English to French, German, Italian and Russian. These include Trouble in Tahiti, Carmen, Faust, Tales of Hoffmann, Rigoletto, La Traviata, La Bohème, Le Nozze di Figaro, Così Fan Tutte, Die Meistersinger, Ariadne auf Naxos, Pagliacci, Gianni Schicchi, Don Giovanni, Hansel and Gretel, Queen of Spades, and the premiere of Lee Hoiby’s This is the Rill Speaking, among many others. He has also concertized as the baritone and bass soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the Requiems of Fauré, Mozart and Verdi, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Handel’s Messiah.

Education and training

Joseph studied privately in the piano studio of Godfrey Schroth, the voice studios of Denes Striny and Michael Paul, and worked with some stellar coaches including Michael Cordovana, Martha Gerhart, Janet Bookspan, Susan Almasi, Doug Martin and William Hicks. He supplemented his training with music theory and ear training at Mannes College of Music, and is now working with Cathy Pescevich Kreplin.

In retirement, Joseph has renewed his passion for piano and clarinet, and is proud to be joining Ascencion Music Academy. From his career as a opera singer come Joseph’s a unique perspective on musicality and artistic expression through music.
